The monitors in the MePACS 24/7 emergency response centre are “a miracle…helping hand…my guardian angel” for many senior Australians, providing immediate and often life-saving assistance in a medical emergency.
Naomi is a MePACS Response Operator and acknowledges how crucial her role is during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many clients depending on her to get help fast.
“My role can be challenging, but it is so rewarding. Even though we answer to many medical emergencies, being a first responder means I am the person to calm our clients, assess what kind of help they need and work quite quickly to call a contact or emergency services.
It’s a responsibility that I take on board and I’m really proud to provide such an important service to so many senior Australians.”
MePACS is classified as an essential service during this COVID-19 pandemic, given that we are an emergency response centre for more than 40,000 people across Australia.
“There is still so much uncertainty and concern going on in the world, even though social restrictions have recently been reduced. We need to continually support seniors if they choose to stay home for longer, as they are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19.
MePACS operate 24/7 to keep seniors safe, and in a pandemic, it is even more important that we are available to help at all hours.”
Naomi can answer more than 100 calls in one shift, and has received many positive responses about the MePACS service.
“So many clients that I have checked in on are grateful for our care during this difficult time.
While we answer alerts for help and when someone forgets to press their ‘daily call’ button in the morning, just being able to have a short conversation with our clients and check on their welfare really makes the difference to them. I think they are happy to have some normality in their lives.”
For clients who choose to continue self-isolating, Naomi reassures them that they can rely on MePACS no matter what time it is.
“I want our clients to know that MePACS is looking out for them – take care of yourself, stay safe and we will be here whenever you need us. All you have to do is press your MePACS alarm.”
